Besides the sheer beauty of this area, let me tell you, they have some great restaurants. One of the favorites of the locals is The Tail O' the Pup. It was this really cool outdoor BBQ/Lobster & Clam bake. I got the ribs and they were fantastic - and the margarita's, mmmmmmmm! We could use a place like that around here. One night Matt and I went to this bar, thinking it was just a regular bar/restaurant - it was called Johnny's. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but we just wanted a little something because we had eaten earlier at the welcome dinner for the athletes and families (which was interesting)and were still a little hungry. We go in thinking we will get some chicken fingers or some other bar-type food and it ended up being a super fancy place, with a $9.00 crab cake as an appetizer, (good but not worth 9 bucks). The night of the Ironman we went to Pete's Steakhouse for our post-race celebration meal. I had probably one of the best dinners from a restaurant I've had in a long time. It was called Chicken Noboli or something like that, yummy. We, of course, made dinner at the condo a couple nights trying to keep costs down. One night we just grilled burgers and made corn on the cob, I forgot how good a burger on a charcoal grill is; we have a propane grill at home.
Enough about food already; We did go out to Whiteface Mountain (now the 3rd time for me). That was an ordeal because Matt's mom is afraid of heights. I explained to her she wouldn't have any problem, but she didn't believe me. We finally convinced her she would be okay, and when she went up, she realized we were right. She even went out onto the rocks near the edge of some cliffs. We had purchased a group passport, which gets you access to all the area events and sightseeing attractions, so we went back to town and toured the Olympic Museum and the site of ice rink where the Miracle on Ice happened when the US Hockey team beat the Russians (for those who don't know) in the 1980 Olympics and later won the gold medal. Then, we went out to the the 90 and 120 meter ski jumps; we couldn't convince Jackie to go with us to the top of the jumps. She waited at the bottom and watched some of the athletes doing ski-jump training in the pool. They do their jumps and land in a pool; it was fun to watch. I think the only thing we didn't do while there was get in a round of golf. If we would have had room in the car to bring our lubs, we would've done that, tooWe came home on Wednesday - and I took Thursday & Friday off. It was so nice to just get some things done around the house and just unplug for a few days before having to get back into the craziness of work again. We were supposed to go to Kid Rock on Friday with our friends, but something happened while we were gone and we didn't get the tickets. Instead, we ended up with tickets for Saturday night @ Pine Knop (it will always be Pine Knob for me) for Elvis Costello and the Police, which was just an amazing concert. Sting came out a sang w/Elvis Costello for a song or two, then the Police took the stage and put on a great show!
